It’s a new year and a new decade! Every January we come up with resolutions to better ourselves-go to the gym four times a week, eat healthier, spend more time with our family, etc. It only makes sense to create style resolutions as well. After all, how many times have you thought “I really should do something to freshen up my living room” or “why is my office always such a mess?” and then continued to do nothing about it? Here are some style resolutions to start the year off right.

Keep it clean: Cleaning is also reported to be a mentally clearing exercise: “Out with the old and in with the new.” This is the simplest way to transform a space without spending any money. Put away the paperwork that’s been scattered across your desk, stick your books and magazines where they belong, and find a place to keep any other items that cause daily clutter such as mail, extra change, and makeup that sits on your bathroom countertop.

Purge: Once you have the daily clutter under control, start looking inside of your cabinets, drawers and closets. Get rid of anything you are not using. If you have random plates and glasses that are not part of your dinnerware set, donate them to Goodwill. There is someone out there who will also be happy to have that pair of pleated jeans with the cuffs, or cropped t-shirt that you don’t wear anymore. While you’re at it, get rid of anything else that is negative in your life. It’s time to more forward!

Organize: After you have cleared out the things you are not using, straighten out the things you have. Cabinets and closets are so much more efficient with an organizational system, and small changes can make a big difference. By adding something as simple as cup hooks and lid holders to your cabinets, there will suddenly be twice the amount of space that you used to have. Using cord controls is also an easy way to get rid of unsightly visual clutter created by electronic equipment.

Take an inventory: After cleaning and organizing, it is the perfect time to walk through your house and make a list of what you need to replace. Do your towels feel like sandpaper from too many washings? Do you need a new set of sheets for your guest room? Now that you have gotten rid of the old, you have room for the new things that will make your home feel fresh again.

The fun part: Organize in a way that also decorates your home. For example, make a photo gallery out of all of those family pictures and combine them with other prints that you have never had framed. Another fun idea is to block your books by color to create a graphic pattern in your bookcase.

Make a plan: You need to reupholster that chair in the living room, but never get around to having it done. Walk around your home and make a list of what you need, whether it is drapery you have wanted in the bedroom for the past 5 years, or to update that college sofa you shouldn’t have any more. This is the year to finally get around to doing it. And if you make a plan it will be much easier to stay on track.

Be greener: While updating it is the perfect time to incorporate environmental responsibility into the everyday, and that includes what you do at home. Be as green as you wish (of course, the greener the better), from putting bamboo floors into the house you’re updating, using energy efficient light bulbs in your lamps, or buying organic cotton sheets for your bed.

We hope you make use of these tips and have a safe, happy, and stylish New Year!
